5 Reasons Why It’s Great to Be a Beginner
December 7, 2020
Whether you’re just beginning to speak a foreign language, try a new workout, or develop a skill, this initial phase is one of the best parts of the learning process. So as you’re getting started with a new pursuit, like cooking, coding, or singing, keep in mind these five reasons why it’s great to be a beginner:
1. You’re excited and motivated.
One of the reasons why it’s great to be a beginner is that this is typically when you’re most excited and motivated to learn. Suppose it’s been a while since you’ve taken on something new. In that case, this can be a really fun time to explore and grow personally and professionally.
2. You notice your improvement.
Another great thing about being a beginner is that you’re more likely to notice how you improve. Something that you couldn’t do a day, week, or month ago becomes almost like second nature.
3. You practice getting out of your comfort zone.
Without taking on new projects or skills, it’s easy to get comfortable wherever you are. But by being a beginner, you’re more likely to take yourself out of your comfort zone. This may not be easy at first, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve tried something new. But being a beginner at something allows you to get some practice being uncomfortable.
4. You get better at making mistakes.
When you’re a beginner, you will probably make some mistakes. Perhaps quite a few of them. And that’s okay! Just as you can ease yourself out of your comfort zone, you can also get better at making mistakes. Being a beginner is not about being perfect. It’s about learning and making mistakes so that you can learn from them and improve your skills.
5. You’re willing to ask for help.
Being a beginner means that there are probably lots of people out there who can help you learn. Not only that, but this is also a time where you’re more willing to seek out help and ask for some assistance. Asking for help is a great reminder that you’re not in this alone.
As you learn and develop a skill, you’ll transition out of this initial beginner stage. Once this happens, try to take the beginner’s mindset with you. Stay excited, notice your improvement, get out of your comfort zone, be willing to make mistakes, and ask for help when you need it.
