What’s your approach to achieving your personal music goals? Are you willing to be patient, put in the work, and commit to the process? Or do you wish that you could experience instant success?
It’s hard not to want that instant success. And since it’s not realistic to wave a magic wand and achieve your goals, the process can sometimes be frustrating or disappointing. So how can you avoid feeling negative about your progress?
Here are a few ways to approach music with a positive mindset:
1. Write your goals down and track your progress.
Goals are powerful. They’re a great tool to drive improvement. And by writing your goals down, not only are you making them more concrete, but you can also post them somewhere you can see them often. Once you have your goals, find a way to track your progress over time. If you don’t feel like you’re making any progress, it’s hard to keep a positive attitude. But if you can look back on all the work you’ve put in and see the improvement, you’ll feel more excited to keep going!
2. Change your vocabulary.
How do you frame your practice time? Is it something that you have to do – like homework? Or is it something you get to do – like take a break in your day to do something for yourself that’s enjoyable? You can create a more positive mindset around practice by changing the words you use to describe that practice time.
3. Focus on the process.
Once you have your goals, make sure that you have a clear plan to achieve them. If you only ever look toward a future outcome without focusing on the daily work needed to get there, those results might be too hard to reach. Approach your vocal practice with your goals in mind but shift your focus to the process. What can you do each day to bring yourself one step closer to your ultimate goal?
It’s not always easy to keep a positive attitude around singing. Another thing that can help is to surround yourself with supportive people who understand what you’re going through. Use this community to build yourself up and stay motivated to stick with your vocal pursuits.
