How a Mindful Approach Benefits Your Music
April 7, 2022
Mindfulness has become a popular topic, and for a good reason. Simply defined, mindfulness is your ability to bring awareness to the present. And this awareness has the potential to improve not only your health but also your music.
Here are a few ways a mindful approach benefits your music:
Manage negative thoughts.
Have you ever noticed how you talk to yourself before, during, or after you practice? Are most of your inner thoughts positive, or are they negative? Becoming more mindful of how you talk to yourself can help you change that inner conversation. For example, if you observe that your internal dialogue is made up of quite a bit of negative self-talk, use your newfound awareness to reframe your thoughts into something more productive.
Develop better body awareness.
Mindfulness helps us become more aware of what’s going on in our minds as well as our bodies. For example, how does your body respond when you practice or perform? Do you feel your shoulders tense? Mindfulness can help you recognize this muscle tension and help you stay more relaxed. Staying relaxed can help you practice and even improve your musical performance.
Where does your mind go when you practice? Do you think about your technique or breathing? Or do you daydream about what you’re going to have for dinner later that night? Taking a more mindful approach to your music can help you with distractions. When you do get distracted, practice bringing your focus back to your music.
Like music, mindfulness is a skill. So, if you feel like you have a hard time with awareness or focus, that’s ok! You’re not alone. But the more you practice awareness and notice when you’re distracted, the more you’ll develop the skill of mindfulness. And over time, you’ll see a change not only in your music but even in your daily life.
