Get-the-Most-Out-of-Your-Online-Voice-Lessons-Fox-MusicWhen you’re not able to attend an in-person lesson, taking online voice lessons from home is a great alternative. While you won’t be in the same room as your voice teacher, you’ll still be able to experience all the benefits of vocal lessons.

Taking lessons online might feel different, at first. But after a few sessions, you’ll find that you’re continuing to improve your skills. Here are a few tips on how to get the most out of your online voice lessons:

1. Make a space where you feel comfortable singing.

If you’re not used to singing outside of a studio or classroom, singing at home might feel a bit awkward. To get more comfortable, create a space that you use only for singing. Find a spot where you can set up your laptop, smartphone, tablet, microphone, etc. And also, try to practice in the same place you take your lesson so that you are even more comfortable before your next lesson occurs.

2. Eliminate distractions.

One of the great things about taking online voice lessons is that it’s convenient. You can attend the lesson in the comfort of your own home. The trade-off here might be that you’re also surrounded by distractions. While creating your space for your voice lessons, do your best to eliminate as many distractions as possible. Do what you can so you can focus one hundred percent of your attention on your singing: silence your phone and turn off notifications, put the dog in another room, shut doors for privacy, etc.

3. Prepare everything you’ll need before your lesson begins.

Prepare for your lesson just as you would if you were commuting to a school or studio. Make sure that you have all you need before you begin. For example, ensure that your music is close at hand and that you already have a glass of water. Just because you can quickly run into another room to retrieve a forgotten item doesn’t mean that this is a great solution. Have everything you need before beginning.

4. Record your lessons.

Another way that you can get more out of your voice lessons is to record what you work on. In fact, many video platforms (such as Zoom) include the ability to record a session. Having this recording can be very helpful later on when you’re practicing what you’ve learned in your lessons. Rather than trying to remember everything your coach told you, you can replay your recording. Just make sure that it’s okay with your instructor.
