Whenever you’re about to start something new, it’s normal to feel anxious or nervous. Starting a new job, joining a new gym, and signing up for singing lessons might make you experience some nervous excitement.
A lot of the time, we feel this way because we don’t know what to expect. Depending on your imagination, you might create all kinds of scenarios in your head. Let’s try to put your mind at ease.
Everyone has their own unique experience with singing lessons. With that being said, here are a few ways to prepare for your first singing lesson:
Your body relies on water for many of its important functions. And believe it or not, your water intake can affect your voice and ability to sing. When your muscles don’t have enough water, it can affect athletic performance. Similarly, when your vocal cords aren’t properly hydrated, it can hurt your vocal performance. By drinking plenty of water, you put less strain on your vocal cords. Try to drink water before your singing lesson and bring a bottle of water with you, as well.
Breathing is not something that requires a lot of focused attention during the day. But during a singing lesson, you’ll become much more aware of your breath. You might be surprised to learn that there is a difference between regular breathing and the proper way to breathe for singing. Something that sounds so simple is so important to your voice. The quality of your breath will directly affect the quality of your singing.
Before you show up for your first lesson, take a moment to remind yourself that you’re not supposed to know everything. You’re not there to be perfect. Singing lessons allow you to learn from a knowledgeable teacher who can help you learn, get better, and improve your confidence . Keep an open mind and try to enjoy yourself. Your first lesson is not about impressing anyone, so don’t put any unnecessary pressure on yourself to perform or meet an imaginary expectation.
Voice teachers know a lot, but they aren’t mind readers. Be ready to articulate your voice goals and what you want to get out of your singing lessons. There is no such thing as a good or bad goal – what you want to accomplish is entirely up to you. Your teacher is there to focus your lessons on your personal goal, so make sure you’re prepared to discuss where you want to take your voice.
In this post, we’ve introduced a few ways you can prepare for your first voice lesson. In the next post, we’ll discuss what you can expect .
