Online Singing Lessons 101

Fox Music

Online singing lessons are a great alternative to in-person lessons. In fact, online lessons have the same benefits as being face-to-face with your voice instructor.

With online lessons, you’ll still receive immediate feedback throughout your lesson while completing the same training and exercise.

What You’ll Need

  • Laptop, tablet, or similar device with a webcam
  • A video calling platform – Your voice instructor will help you with selecting the platform you’ll need. Options include platforms like Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, etc.
  • Reliable internet connection

Your Set-Up

Create a distraction-free area.
Try to eliminate as many distractions as you can before your lesson begins. If you share space with family, set some boundaries before getting started. Try to find something to keep your pets occupied. Or, it might be better if you invite your dog or cat to join you as a captive audience member.

Give yourself some time to adjust.
Your family will hear you sing. Your neighbors might overhear, as well. At first, you might feel self-conscious singing alone in a quiet space. But you’ll soon get used to your set-up and be able to focus on your singing.

With the quality and accessibility of video platforms, online singing lessons are just as effective as taking an in-person lesson. And you might even forget that you’re not even in the same room as your instructor.

The Benefits of Online Lessons

Here are a few of the benefits of taking online voice lessons:

Extra time to warm-up.
Rather than spending time commuting to your voice instructor, you can use that time to prepare and warm-up before your lesson. And rather than dealing with traffic, you’ll feel more relaxed at the beginning of your lesson.

Concentrated training.
With an online voice lesson, you’re much more likely to get right to work with your instructor than taking the first few moments to chat. There can be fewer distractions when meeting online.

Follow-up practice.
As soon as your lesson ends and the video chat has ended, you can take a few minutes to practice what you just learned. Rather than jumping in the car and moving on to your to-do list, you have some time to absorb everything you just learned during your lesson.
