4 Tips to Maximize Practice Time in between Voice Lessons

Fox Music

Let’s say that you’ve signed up for voice lessons. And, you’ve been meeting with your voice coach once a week. Things seem to be going well, but perhaps you’ve wondered, “What about all the time in between lessons?”

Practicing will help you get the most out of each of your lessons. So, here are a few tips on how to maximize your practice time in between your voice lessons.

1. Have a plan.

Singing or practicing “when you feel like it” may not be the best approach to structuring your practice time. Instead, have a plan. Decide what days you will practice and for how long. And then, in each of those practice sessions, know exactly how you will spend your time. If your teacher gives you homework to work on before your next lesson, use that to help guide your practice time. And if you have no idea where to even start with planning, ask your coach for some help.

2. Create a practice space.

Structure can go a long way in helping you get more out of your practice time. Another way to add structure to your practice sessions is to always practice in the same space. So at home, set up a place where you’ll be comfortable practicing. Stepping into this space sends a message to your brain that it’s time to focus on your singing and nothing else. Which leads us into the third practice tip.

3. Eliminate distractions.

Practicing on your own can be tricky when you’re surrounded by things that will distract you. Distractions vary from person to person, but they might come in the form of other people in your home, Netflix shows, the kitchen pantry, or your phone. Take an honest look at the things that tend to distract you from practicing, and do your best to eliminate those distractions. Practice when fewer people are around. Hide the remote control. Close the door to the pantry. And put your phone in another room (if possible).

4. Track your practice time.

Another method you can use to get more out of your practice time, as well as add some structure, is to keep track of your practice time. You can choose to do this in a variety of ways, such as keeping a journal, creating a spreadsheet, etc. By tracking your singing time, you get an idea of the total time you’re practicing as well as keep notes on what you worked on or noticed during each session.
