Meeting Your Acting Goals

Fox Music

When you first begin participating in theater, it’s important to identify what your goals are. Do you want to pursue acting professionally? Do you want to perform in shows just for fun? Whatever your reason for trying theater, identifying goals for yourself can help a teacher guide you towards reaching those goals.

Once you decide what your overarching, long-term goal is, we can break it down into simple actionable steps. No matter what your dreams are, it’s important to remember that acting is a craft. The steps we lay out will be different depending on your long-term goals, but they will always involve staying active as an actor. Repetition and practice are necessary for improvement! Here are some steps you can take right now to work towards your goals, whatever they may be.

Step One: Attend Theater Class Regularly.

If you aren’t already signed up for acting lessons, do it right now. Theater classes have many benefits , including learning about how to reach your goals, making connections with other actors, and of course having fun. A theater teacher can work with you to prepare you for whatever your goals are, and they can help you consistently – at every class you go to. Try to get into the habit of attending once a week. Step Two: Practice and Learn at Home.

A lot of people neglect this step, and it is a mistake. Like any art form, you should practice at home whenever you can. If it’s once a week, twice a week, or once a month, practice as often as you have the chance. What should you do? Work on monologues and build your wheelhouse of performances that you have ready at any given time. Read or watch new plays and musicals and read news from the Broadway community. Remember, this is about staying active in the theatre world and in your acting skills. Stay on top of it! This is how you track your own artistic growth and learn what’s going on in your community. And, luckily, it’s fun.

Step Three: Search and Prepare for Opportunities.

This step will vary depending on your goals. If you’re looking for performance opportunities, seek them out. Auditions are often posted online for commercials, shows, and films. You can seek out opportunities in your local area or at the national level. When you find something you’re interested in, be sure to polish your acting resume and prepare a recent headshot. It’s important that you check regularly. Opportunities won’t find you, you have to find them!

These three steps are a great starting place for any goal you have. To identify more steps towards your goals, talk to your acting teacher during theater class.
