Voice Lessons: How to Overcome the Intimidation

Fox Music

If you’re interested in getting started with voice lessons, what’s holding you back? If you’re feeling intimidated, you’re not alone. It can be challenging to start something new, but it is possible to overcome the intimidation factor.

By focusing on some of the benefits of singing, it might be what you need to take that first step. Here are a few ways to overcome the intimidation of getting started with voice lessons:

1. Walk through the door.

That first step of walking through the studio door might seem simple, but it can be the most challenging part of getting started. Know that it’s normal to feel nervous, so take it one step at a time. Start slow, and don’t get too far ahead of yourself.

2. Others have been where you are.

Other singers have been where you are and know what it’s like to be a beginner. The people that you meet through singing will be encouraging and supportive. Beginners are always welcome.

3. Practice at your own pace.

Your journey with singing is an individual pursuit. The intention is to practice and improve at your own pace. Rather than worrying about keeping up with others, you’re free to focus on improving at a pace that aligns with your individual style and how you learn.

4. Enjoy the learning process.

Because of the learning process, singing can be a mental workout. You’ll learn a lot, and you’ll likely feel confused and overwhelmed at times. These feelings are all part of the learning process, which is something to enjoy.

5. Manage your expectations.

As you’re getting started, let yourself be a beginner. Manage your expectations and be realistic about your starting point. You won’t become a professional overnight, so be patient and commit to the process of improvement.
