Easy Vocal Warm-Up Exercises for Singers

Fox Music

When you begin singing lessons, one of the first exercises you will be introduced to is vocal warmups. It is important for singers to start their singing routine with a vocal warm-up. A proper warmup will do wonders for voice quality by loosening the muscles and increasing blood flow to the vocal cords.

Benefits of Warming Up Your Voice Before Singing

One of the most compelling pragmatic reasons to warm up your voice before singing is so that it sounds its best, as well as:

  • Increases the range and flexibility of the vocal cords so it is easier to hit the high notes.
  • Builds endurance so you can sing for longer without being fatigued or straining your voice.
  • Promotes muscle memory so that practicing becomes more like training.

Risks of Not Warming Up

Not only are vocal warm-up exercises a good start to any singing lesson that will help you sing your best. But there are also a few other risks of not warming up properly.

  • Without a proper warm-up, the vocal cords can become strained or damaged. That may cause nodules, polyps, or other damage to the vocal cords.
  • Warming up your voice prepares it to sing and hit the notes. Without, your voice may sound harsh, strained, or fatigued a good warm-up.
  • Not warming up makes it harder to reach your full range potential, and that can make it challenging to sing your preferred styles of music.
  • Just like athletes take time to stretch and warm up the muscles in their body, singers must warm up their vocal cords to prevent injury.

Vocal Warm Up Exercises

Performing vocal warm up exercises is important for singers. It helps to prepare their voice for performance or practice and only takes 5–10 minutes. Start slowly and gradually increase the intensity of the exercises as your voice warms up. Here are a few of our favorites.

  • Lip trills: Make a “brrr” or “rrrr” sound while vibrating the lips.
  • Tongue twisters: Repeat tongue twisters, such as “Red leather, yellow leather.”
  • Humming: Hum ascending and descending scales.
  • Arpeggios: Sing broken chords to work on your pitch control and dexterity.
  • Vowel sounds: Sing long notes on vowel sounds like “ah,” “ee,” and “oh.”
