Set SMART Singing Goals to Guide Your Lessons

Fox Music

As the year winds down, you might find that you’re starting to think about and plan for what you’d like to accomplish in the coming year. Taking some time to set personal goals for your singing lessons will help you maximize your time spent training with a voice teacher.

Perhaps you want to up your karaoke game, or maybe you have an important competition coming up in a few months? Whatever you might be working toward in the future, goal-setting helps you focus your attention and increase your chances for success.

However, not all goals are created equal. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based. By setting SMART goals, you’re more likely to get the results you seek.

Here are a few tips on how to set SMART singing goals to guide your lessons and get results:

1. Be specific.

To narrow your focus through goal-setting, you have to be clear and specific. A vague goal, like “get better at singing,” is hard to accomplish. How will you know when you’re “better”? Increase your chances of success by defining the specifics of your goal. For example, “Practice four times a week for 45 minutes for the next six months.” is a clearly defined goal that will no doubt improve your vocal skills.

2. Make sure you have a way to measure your progress.

Without a way to measure your goal, you will never be able to gauge your progress. Rather than chasing a vague vision of success, define the tangible results you will measure as you work toward achieving your goal.

3. Be realistic.

A realist goal is one that will challenge you, but it’s not impossible to accomplish. If your goals are unrealistic or so far out of reach that you have no chance of success, it can hurt your motivation. If you’re not sure if your goals are achievable, keep in mind that it’s always okay to make modifications. Altering your goals so that they’re realistic is better than giving up entirely.

4. Relevant goals keep you invested.

Set goals that fit your unique skills and ambition. If you’re not interested in performing in front of others, then don’t set goals around performance. Instead, focus your goals on vocal skills or improving your confidence. The more your goals involve your unique pursuits, the more invested you’ll be in the process.

5. Goals need a deadline.

Without a deadline, it’s easy to keep pushing your goal off into the future. Create a timeline for your goals. In this timeline, include mini-deadlines so that you can check in on your progress. Accomplishing smaller goals help keep you motivated and excited to maintain the momentum necessary to reach your bigger goals.
